Delaware Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:

What is a natural deterrent for squirrels?
For animal lovers, squirrels can be cute and adorable, but they are a danger for vegetable gardens. They destroy corn, tomatoes, and any vegetable garden they found. Keeping squirrels out of the field can be difficult but here are some ideas which may help
Hot Pepper Plants and Cayenne Pepper
Squirrels hate the hot pepper. If you spread crushed red paper near the plants, this will help your plants to save form squirrels. If you lightly spray cayenne pepper on the leaves of plants, this also can help. Mix petroleum jelly with cayenne pepper and spread it on the stems of the plant, near poles, fence, and solid things.
Garlic spray
Squirrels don’t like garlic smell. Make a liquid by mixing chopped garlic, water, and vinegar. Keep this liquid closed in a plastic bottle for a few days. After is gets mixed, you can spray it on plant leaves and nearby places.
Apple cider vinegar
The tart flavor and acidic smell of apple cider vinegar can be useful to get rid of squirrels. Use this at the place where you have seen the squirrel. If you want to spray apple cider vinegar on plant leaves, then you must add water in it. But you can spray 100% pure apple cider vinegar on a hard surface.
Use of Peppermint Essential Oil
Squirrels don’t like peppermint smell. Similarly, you can use peppermint oil as a squirrel repellent. You can soak cotton balls and place them near plants in your garden. You have to soak those cotton balls again almost every week. You can also make a strong spray by mixing peppermint oil with vinegar.
Scaring Squirrels
You can use motion-detecting light, sounds, and other tools to scare the squirrels. You can use owl decays and sculpture.
Dog or cat
Dogs and cats chase squirrels. If your dog or cat chases squirrel every time, they visit. This can be helpful, but some dogs don’t show any interest in chasing squirrels, so this is not helpful every time.
Squirrel traps
Place squirrel traps near the places where you have often seen the squirrels and use sunflower seeds, corn, or any other thing in squirrel traps. Once squirrel gets trapped release it some faraway place from your home
Attractive things for squirrels
The food you place for the birds should not be placed near the garden, smells of fruit and seeds can attract squirrels. Keep your garbage and trash bins closed.
Cages for your vegetable plants
If any of other option is not working cages can be helpful, as a squirrel cannot break cages so they will not get into vegetable plants, try to make wired cages.
Squirrel Repelling Bulbs and Plants
To keep squirrels out of the garden, you can grow some bulbs and plant near vegetables. Squirrels hate bulbs and some plants smell. Daffodils, hyacinths, alliums, lily of the valley, peppermint and geranium are best to grow near the vegetables.
